The Syrenka Series Interview/Giveaway

Arise

By: Amber Garr
Series: The Syrenka
Publication Date: July 4th 2012
Book # 3

~ Blurb ~

With power comes the responsibility to accept its consequences.

After the betrayal of those closest to her, Eviana Dumahl struggles to cope with her new reality. Kidnapped, broken, and confused, she is forced to engage in a war that will alter merfolk politics forever. With her estranged father leading the charge, Eviana has no choice but to stand by his side. Her continued existence hinges on the acceptance of the power growing inside her, even when that means embracing the family’s dark lineage.

Kain Matthew will sacrifice the world for Eviana. And he is not alone. As time runs out, her friends fight to save her life and theirs. An unlikely alliance gives them the edge they need to take a stand, although it keeps Eviana’s heart trapped in the past. A new discovery explains some of her previous mistakes, but it may not be enough to stop her father’s plans. Merfolk, selkies, and water sprites work together to save their kind, only in this final battle, not everyone will survive.

In the striking series conclusion, Eviana will learn the true meaning of power, sacrifice, and love.

Betrayal

By: Amber Garr
Series: The Syrenka
Publication Date: February 20th 2012
Book # 2

~ Blurb ~

Life as a mermaid can be suffocating.

Eviana Dumahl has returned home as a clan leader, an orphan, and a heartbroken teenage girl. Her parents are dead and her boyfriend, Brendan, has decided that he needs some time away. While battling her inner turmoil, Eviana is forced into the war that Lucian Sutherland has incited amongst her own kind. With the help of Kain, her friend and formally betrothed, the two work together to prove that they deserve their birthrights as young merfolk leaders.

When the Council requests a demonstration of Eviana’s mermaid powers, she finds herself with an opportunity to win back Brendan’s heart. But her orders to train with a repulsive merman and the presence of an attractive new suitor challenges Eviana to embrace her leadership and resist temptation. Lucian is after her, and no one seems to understand why. Loyalties are tested as the casualties increase, showing Eviana that sometimes it is impossible to delineate between friends and enemies.

Betrayal is the second book of The Syrenka Series trilogy following Eviana and her friends as they navigate through the challenges of existing in a secret world.

Promises

By: Amber Garr
Series: The Syrenka
Publication Date:
Book # 1

~ Blurb ~

Sometimes following your heart can end up destroying the ones you love.

When seventeen-year-old Eviana Dumahl is faced with the responsibility of an arranged marriage and clan leadership, she is forced to choose between the life required of a mermaid and one of a teenage girl simply infatuated with the wrong guy. Kain, her devoted fiancĂ© would make a wonderful husband except that she’s been in love with Brendan, a shape-shifting selkie, ever since they were kids. Choosing to abandon her family, her clan, and her life with Kain will have dire consequences far beyond anything she could have imagined.

A war is brewing amongst the clans and Eviana unwittingly becomes a pawn in the intricate schemes of a twisted mastermind. With Brendan’s life on the line, she has no choice but to involve those who she once considered friends. Amidst encountering senseless tragedies and immense loss, Eviana discovers that she is more valuable as a clan leader than anyone ever suspected. Her survival is not only dependent upon the loyalty of her friends, but also on her acceptance of a life that she had so adamantly tried to escape.

Promises is the first book of The Syrenka Series trilogy following Eviana and her friends through the perils of growing up in a discrete world that inherently threatens human society.

About the Author

Amber Garr spends her days conducting scientific experiments and wondering if her next door neighbor is secretly a vampire. Born in Pennsylvania, she lives in Florida with her husband and their furry kids. Her childhood imaginary friend was a witch, Halloween is sacred, and she is certain that she has a supernatural sense of smell. She writes both adult and young adult urban fantasies and when not obsessing over the unknown, she can be found dancing, reading, or enjoying a good movie.

My interview with Amber Garr

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I work as a research marine biologist at a university as my day job so I spend quite a bit of my day conducting experiments, writing grant proposals, journal manuscripts, and technical articles.  By the time I get home, I’m ready to escape the world through writing or reading!  I also teach dance classes at a local studio and am involved in a state-wide writer’s network.  My kids are of the four-legged nature, I don’t drink coffee, and my husband is a biologist too.

2. What does your family think of your writing?
I think they were surprised at first.  I hadn’t spent too many hours writing until I got an injury that prevented me from dancing and I needed to fill my time with something creative.  But they are fans now, and even my husband will be my beta reader sometimes (he never reads!).

3. List 3 of your favorite books?
That is so hard to do because I read every single day!  My preference is urban fantasy so anything by Kelley Armstrong, Kim Harrison, Richelle Mead, or Charlaine Harris is on my list of favorites and has probably been read two or three times!

4. What is one of your favorite quotes?
Be obscure clearly. – E.B. White

5. Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I remember loving my seventh grade creative writing class, but I was so focused on science that I never got to take those kinds of classes throughout college.  Fast forward to recent times, and I would say that my interest really began a couple of years ago.  After reading so many books, I decided to try my own hand at creating and wrote a bunch of short stories for my own eyes.  After the first night I sat down to make myself write, I was doing it all of the time!

6. Do you work with an outline, or just write?
I am such an anal retentive, type A person that I have to have some sort of plan for my full length books.  I use a rough outline for each chapter where I plot out the major events or conversations, but my outlines are handwritten in my zombie notebook and not typed on the computer.

7. Where did you get your ideas for writing this series?
The mermaid part was something I always wanted to explore (me being a marine biologist and all) and the first chapter of Promises was originally a short story I wrote a couple of years ago.  That story turned into a trilogy!  I decided to add the other water creatures so that my world and my characters revolved around water.  The selkie folklore was fascinating to me and I love the idea of supernatural creatures living amongst unsuspecting humans.  Plus, writing about all of these meant that I could live in their world for a while!

8. Who is your favorite your character in this series and why?
Another tough question…I enjoyed writing Eviana (the main character) because I liked watching her mature and come into her own person.  I’d also have to say that I love Abhainn (the water sprite).  He wasn’t supposed to be a regular, but he was just too cool not to include in Eviana’s story.  Plus, I love his accent!

9. Is there anything you found particularly challenging in writing this series?
Considering that I didn’t originally set out to make this a series, I think the most challenging part was to make sure that the overarching plot line was realistic, exciting, and worth three books.  I wanted to see my teenage characters evolve and learn from their mistakes.  It was also tricky to make sure that my world building was consistent yet fascinating at the same time.

10. What chapter was the most memorable to write and why?
Can I cheat and say two?  There is one in the middle of Promises where Eviana makes a very tough decision, and it’s one that I know will/has frustrated some readers.  But she’s young and rebellious, so I felt that I had to take the chance and write what a girl in her situation would really do.  The second memorable chapter is toward the end of the series in Arise.  I don’t want to give anything away, but I had to kill someone, and every time I read it I got tears in my eyes.  It had to happen, but it doesn’t mean that I was happy about it!
